Phonics & Reading

Welcome to the Phonics and Reading Page

Here you will find the sounds that your child will learn in school to help them to read and spell.  Also, there are some links to web pages to support learning at home in a fun way.

In Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 we follow the Read Write Inc (RWInc) phonics/Set Sounds and reading programme.  This is supplemented by various reading schemes that promote a love for reading.  This has been highly effective in ensuring our pupils make rapid progress and become proficient readers.

*In Reception our pupils will be completing Set 1 Sounds and moving onto Set 2.

*In Year 1 our pupils will be completing Set 2 and Set 3 Sounds in preparation for the Phonics Screening Test in June.

*In Year 2 those pupils still working towards the Phonic Screening Test will continue to have further input on the Set Sounds.  Once secure with their phonics they move onto vocabulary and grammar work.

Every year group has a structured daily guided reading session.  This is when all our key adults in school provide targeted support following our reading scheme or RWInc reading programme.  All our classrooms have a reading area and access to ICT reading opportunities.

Every class will visit the library every week and have the opportunity to freely select a book from our wide choice.  Parent's in Reception are welcome to join their child during their library session.

Parent workshops will be provided throughout the year so keep a look out for these dates coming soon.

We also run Better Reading sessions with the wonderful support of our parents.  If you would like to offer your help on a Tuesday and Thursday afternoon, please come and see Mrs Wareing.

Thank you!
