Swimming Report

Swimming and water safety

All schools must provide swimming instruction either in key stage 1 or key stage 2.

In particular, pupils should be taught to:

  • swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres
  • use a range of strokes effectively [for example, front crawl, backstroke and breaststroke]
  • perform safe self-rescue in different water-based situations

(As taken from the Department for Education statutory guidance)

Swimming at St. Stephen's takes place at Blackburn Leisure Centre with children in year 3 receiving swimming lessons on a Thursday afternoon in the Autumn, Spring and Summer terms.  All children receive an hour swimming lesson weekly every other half term.

Where required, we provide swimming booster sessions for the year 6 children to ensure that the expected level of proficiency is achieved.
