Eco Council

Mrs Shivnan and the Eco-Council team are looking forward to the exciting year ahead! We are eager to find ways to respect and look after God's beautiful world.

At the beginning of the year, each class in Key Stages 1 and 2 are invited to elect a council member who will help to look at the way the school can become more environmentally friendly and champion environmental changes within our school.

Children are requested to put a short paragraph together detailing why they would make a real difference as part of the Eco School Council and their class members vote anonymously.

The elected members meet regularly, giving up part of their lunchtimes to attend meetings and discuss issues including:

  • Recycling paper and glass
  • Recycling the milk bottles
  • Composting
  • Helping our local community
  • How to make our school community greener
  • Saving water
  • Keeping our school tidy

Everyday we record which children have walked to school on the tracker. Children need to walk once a week for four weeks to receive a badge.

Every month, we help Mrs Shivnan with the data and give out the badges.

Recycling Assembly - Get to Know Your Bins

In September, we wrote and filmed an assembly to make the school aware of what happens during the recycling process.

KS 1 filmed a video about what goes in each of the 4 bins in Blackburn.

STOP THE BLOCK: Assembly with Mad Science

United Utilities teamed up with Mad Science to deliver an assembly so children at St Stephen’s understand the issues caused by the wrong things going down the toilet.

The assembly was great and we got free toilet roll.

Litter Picking

In November, Blackburn council gave us a large amount of litter picking equipment.

This is used weekly to collect litter from our school environment. They have been used by year 2 for their topic and during Passport by Blackburn Rovers. All helping to keep school and surrounding areas tidy.

Recycling Team from Blackburn Council

In January, people from the council visited years 2 & 6 to run fun and educational activities so we understand more about the recycling process.

Our Energy Saving Week Assembly

In January, we delivered another assembly. This time it was on Energy Saving. We filmed ourselves and created AI characters and Mrs Shivnan turned us into cartoons.

We were all very proud of ourselves for this amazing assembly.
